"Old School" versus "Tech Savvy" ways of Exploring a New Town
Wow, I just realized. I’ve managed to survive four moves over the last decade. Now, I’m looking to stay put, settle down, and plant some roots. Don’t get me wrong, moving can be an exciting new adventure! Having been through as many moves as I have, I’m actually somewhat of an old pro at finding my way around a new town. I could benefit though by adding some “tech savvy” options to my “old school” ways. I’m always hearing, “They have an app for that!” Now that I’ve settled into my new home and have started looking for new hangouts and favorite go-to spots, let’s see if there is indeed an app for that as well!
Take a walk around your new town.
This is a great way to get to know your new surroundings and possibly spot some things you might otherwise overlook while driving around in the car. You’ll discover places the locals frequent, like neighborhood parks and quaint streets.
APP for that: AroundMe - takes your exact location and lets you see what sort of amenities are around you, like supermarkets, gas stations, hotels, hospitals, and more.
Eat and shop local.
Forget the big chain establishments you’re already familiar with. Go try out a local coffee shop or pizza place. They usually have a corkboard brimming with various community activities and services. Check out the local scene and ask around for advice on places to go; from where to eat to the best options for local services, like drycleaners and salons.
APP for that: Foursquare - according to foursquare.com/about: learns what you like and leads you to places you’ll love. Find great recommendations based on your tastes, your ratings for similar places, and the friends and experts you trust most.
Visit your public library.
Libraries are a great resource for community happenings. They have more to offer than just loaning out books and magazines. Public libraries usually host an assortment of free programs and services. From attending an adult lecture to a children’s story time, you can get to know other people that live in the area and have them help you navigate your way around town.
APP for that: Meetup - is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup allows people who share common interests and hobbies in an area to find each other and enjoy those activities as a group.
As with most things in life, there are many options and ways to achieve the same end result. So, whether your preferred method of exploring is on foot or via smartphone, maybe even a mixture of the two, the bottom line is you still need to seek out the information. A new town’s happenings and particular places of interest won’t come knocking at your door. You’ve got to get out, search for those places, and ultimately try them out for yourself. Expand your horizons, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Getting to know a new town is an exciting prospect to be embraced with great enthusiasm. I’m going to try the apps I’ve found to really get to know my new home town.
