Ninety years is a long time to be in business! As we look back we're pleased to see the many positive changes both with our company and the community we serve. We're also glad that some things remain the same. Like our ability to adapt and diversify according to the needs of our members. Some may ask the secret to our 90 years, and we'd probably say it's because we listen, we get involved, and we are loyal to our members. Our founders could not have imagined the multitude of services and conveniences we now offer, or the directions we have taken, but we are certain they would be proud of where we stand today.
It all started with a small group of Bell Telephone System employees who, acting independently of their employer, created the Credit Union solely for the "promotion of thrift" among its members. This was accomplished by accumulation of member savings and the subsequent loaning of those funds at modest interest rates to other members. Telephone Credit Union of N.H. was originally located on Concord Street in Manchester and was run by volunteers in the early years. In 1965, Richard D. Mahoney was hired as the first official employee of the credit union and within a few short months he became manager, overseeing three full time employees. In 1976, Dick Mahoney was elected President of the Credit Union, a position he continued to hold for 25 years. In 1991, our current facility at 425 Hooksett Road became the main office of Bellwether. In 2001, we received our charter to provide membership to anyone living or working in New Hampshire. 2001 is also the year that Michael A. L'Ecuyer was appointed President/CEO, taking that role over from his predecessor, the late Richard D. Mahoney. In 2004, Telephone Credit Union of N.H. merged with Greater Nashua Federal Credit Union, and through that merger added our second branch location in Nashua. In 2005, the Credit Union changed its name from Telephone Credit Union of N.H. to Bellwether Community Credit Union (BCCU) to better reflect the diversity of its members. The credit union continued to grow and in June 2006, the members of Compass Credit Union voted to approve a merger with BCCU adding our third branch on Valley Street in Manchester. The Valley Street branch is now closed, but our Bedford branch is coming soon and new branches are being considered for future growth. Today, we are proud to provide our products and services to families and businesses across the state of New Hampshire and beyond, with a total membership that exceeds 27,000.
We support organizations as diverse as the Palace Theatre, the Currier Museum, local softball, baseball and soccer teams, and the NH Food Bank, as well as community events like the Boys and Girls Club's Day for Kids, Manchester's Go Red for Women event, activities for both the Nashua and Manchester Chambers of Commerce, and many more walks, festivals, and fundraisers!
